Mr. Paul Perkinson: Update from Upstairs


In the welcoming speech he gave on the first day back from summer break, Mr. Perkinson warned us about excessive blinking, assuring us that this year would fly by, and that before we’d know it, it would be summer again.  I, of course, proceeded to blink as many times as I could, but to my dismay I found that it was still September, and there was still a whole year ahead.

When I met with Mr. Perkinson earlier this week, he was quick to praise the diligence and devotion of the many faculty members, and of the school community as a whole, that has made the first weeks of school run so smoothly.  He also mentioned that the administration, like its student body, is facing many new assignments in the coming year.  Mr. Perkinson spoke last Thursday night on the topic of strategic planning — our priorities in terms of spending money. To this point, he stated that GSA is a constantly evolving institution, and that we want to design our future rather then have it dictated to us by the conditions at hand. As part of this, he said that we have to determine what is essential to GSA as we move forward, like the special rapport we have with our teachers, and what can be made better (I’d list all the things that could be made better, but I’ve got a word limit):

“George Stevens Academy will continue to be a school where teacher-student relations are the foundation of superior instruction, humane engagement and transformational growth.”

Mr. Perkinson realized that this is a tricky time for most of us here at GSA.  We all have something new that we are trying to come to terms with.  The freshmen are trying to figure out how to traverse the vast maze of high school, new international students are working out even more than that, and seniors are trying to get some grasp of their future. Through all this, Mr. Perkinson advised that we keep up the momentum that we entered the school year with, noting that while this is a stressful time, getting back into rhythm is key.
